Cedarwood essential oil, aka Cedrus Atlantica, has a warm and woody smell. It has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicines as an incense ingredient to aid in meditation, himalayan cedar is both stimulating to the body and calming to the mind.

Compared to many other essential oils, cedarwood has a relatively simple chemical profile, and a high percentage of aromatic compounds. It is steam distilled from the wood, needles, leaves, bark, and berries of the Cedar tree, and is useful in alleviating the tension and anxiety that is born of our modern day always on the go lifestyle when diffused or inhaled directly. Renowned for its calming and grounding properties, it helps one find emotional equilibrium.

Cedarwood essential oil can also be used cosmetically. Topically, it can improve circulation and soothe itchiness when massaged into the scalp. Cedarwood can be used on various areas of the skin to soothe irritation, inflammation, redness, and itchiness, as well as dryness that leads to cracking, peeling, or blistering. It is a good addition to your skin care routine because the oil eliminates acne-causing bacteria and guards the skin from pollutants.

When used in aromatherapy, Cedarwood oil can deodorize, repel insects, mildew prevention, relaxation, enhance concentration, ease tension and improve sleep quality. It blends well with herbal oils like Clary Sage, woody oils like Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cypress, floral oils such as Jasmine and Neroli, citrus oils, and even other spicy essential oils like Frankincense, Bergamot and Cinnamon Bark. It is a nice addition to a men's fragrance blend.

Cedar trees can live to be 1000-2000 years old, so they have had ample opportunity to 'breathe'. It is with this in mind that it can effectively be used to to sooth the lungs during those long and physically / emotionally taxing winter months. Just combine cedar in your diffuser with some eucalyptus, chamomile and lavender, and relief is right there.
