The smell of Balsam of Peru (also pronounced Balsam Peru or Peru Balsam) essential oil is akin to vanilla, with notes of cinnamon and a touch of clove. The oil is dark brown in color and has a very enjoyable smell. As with most essential oil, Balsam of Peru essential oil can be either diffused or topically applied, but the very enjoyable scent of this essential oil makes it a favorite for diffusion in aromatherapy mixtures. It blends well with many other types of oils.

A powerful medicinal resin, Balsam of Peru essential oil has long been utilized for relief from anxiety and stress. A session of aromatherapy inhalation will allow its essential oil to induce hormonal shifts and reduce the stress hormones in your system. This state of calm will give your body a break from the negative effects that are caused by stress.

If you suffer from any sort of respiratory affliction, the expectorant nature of Balsam of Peru may be precisely what you need. By way of aromatherapy, it can stimulate the lungs to expel any and all collected phlegm, which also clears out congestion in the respiratory tracts.

Peruvian Balsam essential oil is particularly effective at soothing a dry, irritated scalp and removing dandruff. To get rid of dandruff, add a couple of drops of the oil to your shampoo and wash as usual. You can add a couple of drops to a glass of water to use as a cleansing rinse after shampooing, or mix a couple of drops into a carrier oil and massage onto the scalp.

This essential oil helps prevent moisture loss, which is especially effective at moisturizing chapped, broken, or damaged skin. Additionally, it reduces rashes and eczema, leaving skin feeling soft and supple. To calm irritated skin, mix a few drops of Peruvian balsam into a carrier oil and massage onto the affected skin. You can repeat this twice daily until the appearance of the skin improves.

Balsam Peru Essential Oil has been known to be a soothing addition to skin creams and cleansers because of it’s rich, vanilla-like scent. It can reduce evaporation in mixtures and is thus a great additive in perfumes and scented products to prevent them from losing their aroma. Peru balsam is collected from wild trees along the 'Balsam Coast' of El Salvador and through out North & South America. It is actually extracted from the balsam, also known as the sap, of the tree. It can be used in aromatherapy and often used when treating wounds due to its prominent antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities.

Peruvian Balsam essential oil blends nicely with cinnamon, clove, vanilla, patchouli, black pepper, lavender, frankincense, cedarwood, and ylang-ylang essential oils.

Balsam of Peru essential oil can be irritating to the skin in some people, especially when it is not diluted with a carrier oil. You will want to test it before first use by rubbing a dime sized area on your forearm if you plan topical applications.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for many different reasons, such as mood enhancement, purifying your home and enhancing your physical well-being. Technically, they are a concentrated, natural aromatic liquid derived from the flowers, seeds, stems, barks and roots of plants, generally distilled by steam or cold pressing. When inhaling the aroma from essential oils, it is widely believed to stimulate brain function. When these oils are absorbed through the skin, they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing. Best of Nature Essential Oils are carefully sourced from all over the world and they stand behind their products integrity. Their Oils are 100% pure, ensuring the highest quality available. Although Peruvian balsam essential oil has a wide variety of medicinal uses, the resin itself is one of the most allergic substances in nature - it contains 5 food allergens. It is also not safe to take orally, since it can potentially damage your kidneys. Because of this, it’s especially important to conduct a small patch test before using this oil topically. Alternatively, you can consult your doctor to determine the feasibility of its use.

Standard precautionary measures when handling Peru balsam oil include diluting it with a safe carrier oil like coconut, jojoba, sweet almond and olive. It is especially important to conduct a small skin patch test before this oil topically. Simply apply a few drops of the essential oil on a small portion of your skin and wait for at least 24 hours. If any reaction occurs, stop using it immediately.
